THE SIGU

The Italian Society of Human Genetics (SIGU ETS) was set up on 14 November 1997, as a result of the merger of the pre-existing Italian Association of Medical Genetics and the Italian Association of Medical Cytogenetics, which simultaneously ceased their activities.

In addition to the predominantly scientific objectives of the Association, the new Society proposes itself as a reference and advisory structure for problems of scientific and health interest concerning Human Genetics in all its aspects of application to man.

The SIGU intends to collaborate with those in Italy who are interested in research and in any kind of in-depth study relating to the disciplines of Medical Genetics and Human Genetics, in particular by drawing up quality criteria for Medical Genetics laboratories operating in public and private healthcare facilities, by contributing to the drafting of guidelines in the field of Human Genetics research, and by promoting public awareness of the functions, potential and limits of Human Genetics diagnostic techniques by all means.

Over 1,000 medical geneticists and biologists have currently joined the Association.
